Doom Prevails Upgrade Guide: Budget & Baller Swaps for Doctor Doom (MTG Commander)

Doom Prevails Upgrade Guide — Doctor Doom Commander

Prefer to watch? The full breakdown is on our channel.

Doctor Doom's precon, Doom Prevails, is one of the hottest decks in Commander right now (3,861 tracked decks on EDHREC as of early July, and still climbing). It's a blast out of the box. It also leaves a lot of power on the table. So here are two ways to sharpen it: a $19 budget pass anyone can afford, and a $213 baller build if you want to push it. Every swap below is grounded in the official decklist, EDHREC synergy data, and the card's actual rules text.

How Doctor Doom actually wins

Doom's line reads: whenever you discard one or more land cards, each opponent loses 2 life. The key detail that shapes every good pick: the drain is per discard event, not per land. Discarding one land, five times, drains far more than dumping five lands at once. So the upgrades all lean toward the same thing: repeatable single-land discards and payoffs that trigger off them. Doom is a Villain who connives each combat, so the deck also wants smooth card filtering to keep the discards flowing.

Where the precon is soft

Three things hold the stock deck back, and the community agrees on all three:

  1. Too many themes. Villain typal, connive, discard, and a play-from-exile mini-package all dilute each other. The upgrades trim the detours and commit to discard.
  2. Flavor-first includes. Several Villains are fun comic cameos, not plan pieces.
  3. Thin interaction and clunky mana. Not enough ways to protect the engine.

The budget pass — 10 swaps, $19.32 total

Every card here is under $8, and each one replaces a specific weak card in the precon:

Ledger Shredder — free connive triggers all game
Ledger Shredder — free connive triggers all game
  • Leader, Super-Genius ($0.23) — a second connive every combat, and every connive draws first. In for Batroc the Leaper.
  • Ledger Shredder ($7.63) — connives on the table's second spell every turn, free discard triggers all game.
  • Archfiend of Ifnir ($0.45) — every cycle or discard puts a −1/−1 counter on all enemy creatures.
  • Cool but Rude ($6.99) — turns each discard into 2 more damage to each opponent, stacking on Doom's drain.
  • Archnemesis ($1.26) — the top-synergy enchantment on Doom's page: attack the marked player to drain, draw, and gain.
  • Seismic Assault ($0.69) — "discard a land: 2 damage anywhere," and each activation also triggers Doom's drain.
  • Faithless Looting ($0.33) — the cheapest loot engine in red, with flashback.
  • Frantic Search ($1.09) — an effectively free loot of two that feeds every payoff.
  • Tectonic Reformation ($0.38) — gives every land in hand cycling, turning them into repeatable Doom drains.
  • Dakmor Salvage ($0.27) — dredges back to your hand so you can discard the same land over and over.

Out: Batroc the Leaper, Stilt-Man, Abomination, Age of Ultron, Endless Ranks of HYDRA, Lady Loki, Extract Power, Syphon Mind, Klaw, and one Swamp.

The baller build — 8 swaps, $213.20 total

If you want to spend, these are the highest-impact additions:

Norman Osborn // Green Goblin — the highest-synergy card on Doom's page
Norman Osborn // Green Goblin — the highest-synergy card on Doom's page
Crucible of Worlds — pitch a land, drain, replay it, forever
Crucible of Worlds — pitch a land, drain, replay it, forever
  • Norman Osborn // Green Goblin ($16.96) — the single highest-synergy card on Doom's page. Unblockable conniver; flipped, your graveyard's nonland cards gain mayhem.
  • Monument to Endurance ($18.53) — every discard: draw, make a Treasure, or each opponent loses 3.
  • Bone Miser ($25.32) — discarded lands make black mana (plus Doom's drain), creatures make Zombies, everything else draws.
  • Green Goblin, Nemesis ($12.85) — land discards make Treasures, nonland discards grow your Goblins.
  • Crucible of Worlds ($29.87) — play lands from your graveyard: pitch a land, drain, replay it, forever.
  • Underworld Breach ($11.70) — your whole graveyard becomes castable for a turn, and this deck fills a graveyard fast.
  • Jeska's Will ($41.43) — a huge ritual that fuels the explosive turn.
  • Fierce Guardianship ($56.54) — a free counterspell with Doom out, adding the interaction reviewers say is missing.

Out: the eight lowest-synergy nonland cards left in the precon — Titania, Damocles Base, Kang Prime, Killmonger, Superior Foes of Spider-Man, Tri-Sentinel, Kang Dynasty, and Puppet Master.
